By the end of the 1920s, a patron’s first-time visit to a new motion picture theater might well have seemed like a magic carpet ride. Consider, for example, the San Mateo Theater on Third Avenue that premiered on July 23, 1925. The structure was bathed in a garish blaze of electric light. Reporters wrote that excited first-nighters found the 1,200-seat auditorium “an architectural masterpiece.” The elegant setting combined Moorish, Egyptian, Arabic and Hindu elements that blended the “mysticism of the Orient and the last word of Occidental conveniences.” A seat in the balcony cost a quarter and for the parquet, 35 cents. Those preferring the more luxurious lodges paid a full 50 cents. More than a mere movie, patrons were treated to an organ recital, a singing group and a dance number.

Roddy’s life won’t fade into history, I was happy to find out. Katie Cooney, a freelance photographer who met Roddy a few years back on an assignment, is working on his biography. SPECIAL MENTION: One of the consistent highlights at the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame dinner is the presentation of the award for Special Olympian of the Year, which this year went to Kris Peterson — a three-sport athlete with Special Olympics Northern California. Peterson, who is also a poet, received two standing ovations and delivered an eloquent, moving speech in which he said he embraces being a role model for people with differing abilities.
