Underwood soon will attend her first prom as an openly gay woman, joining others at the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District’s first Senior LGBTQ Prom on Friday. The idea for the prom came during a district employee training session run by Lavender Seniors. The nonprofit group leads awareness workshops and provides support for gay seniors. “We learned that a lot of seniors were not able to attend the prom with their partners. They were often isolated; they couldn’t be openly gay, they had to be in the closet,” said Daniela Keiffer, a recreation supervisor for the park district.
